#PrkBalingian: End of SUPP feud in sight

MUKAH: Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem yesterday announced the reconciliation of the two feuding factions in Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) paving the way for the end of the internal crisis besetting the party since its last Triennial Delegates Conference in 2011.

During a meeting the Chinese community at a hotel here, Adenan said leaders of the two factions – president Tan Sri Peter Chin and Sibu branch chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh both wanted to save the party from being de-registered.

“For the sake of SUPP, Chin and Soon Koh are prepared to reconcile and reach a compromise.”

He did not expect them to solve the differences in the immediate future but he believed that since they were comrades before, it could be done.

“For the time being, it will be difficult as both Peter and Soon Koh can be stubborn. I believe the Chinese community in Sarawak is sick and tired of seeing the leaders quarrelling all the time. This has been going on for three years, enough.

“SUPP could have won Piasau, Sarikei and Batu Kawah if you had not quarrelled among yourself.”

However, he said that to reach a settlement there must be give and take and hoped both factions would compromise to for the survival of the party.

“Only when you are united can you tell the Chinese community you are worth their votes,” said Adenan, adding that SUPP leaders must set a good example for the Chinese voters.

He pointed out that the crisis in Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) had been settled with the return of party leaders who were sacked and his next hope was to see SUPP re-united.

He asked the Chinese community to support BN candidate Yussibnosh Balo and not repeat their voting pattern in previous elections when BN won in all polling stations in Balingian constituency except at Chong Boon Primary School.

“Don’t put me to shame. Don’t put Pehin Sri (Taib Mahmud, the Yang-di-Pertua Negeri) to shame. No one serves the state longer than him – 52 years – from the days when the hair was black until it all turned grey,” said Adenan.

Before Adenan ended his speech, he asked Chin, SUPP’s secretary Dr Sim Kui Hian, Piasau chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting and Soon Koh as well as other leaders aligned with Soon Koh – Senadin chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, as well as Bengoh chairman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil to shake hands with each other in front of the Chinese community.

The SUPP leaders also joined their hands together to show their willingness to reconcile.
