MUKAH (Sarawak), March 27 (Bernama) -- The government wants fishermen to progress from merely catching fish to processing marine products as well to increase their income, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Thursday.
He said it was not proper for fishermen to be confined to fishing without engaging in activities that could give value added to their catch.
"The government wants to develop an industry where modern fishermen have the capacity and skills to not only fish but also process the catch to give value added to their efforts," he said.
Muhyiddin spoke at a gathering of fishermen in conjunction with the 40th annual general meeting of the Mukah/Oya Fishermen's Association here.
He said the government, through the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM), would help realise this initiative by granting soft loans and other aid to fishermen.
