MUKAH,
March 24 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) hopes to have more than 70 per cent
of voters in the Balingian state constituency to come out to exercise their
right on polling day for the Balingian by-election this Saturday.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Wanita deputy chief Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said that in the previous election, the voter turn-out was 70 per cent which resulted in then Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to win the seat with a majority of 5,154 votes.
"This time around, we want a higher percentage in the voter turn-out, so that the vote-majority will be higher," she said at a function in Kampung Telian Ulu here.
Fatimah, who is Sarawak Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister, said the BN election machinery, which had embarked on a house to house campaign, found that the people still favoured the BN.
However, this had to be manifested through votes in the by-election this Saturday, she added.
The Balingian by-election will be a straight fight between BN candidate, former Dalat district officer Yussibnosh Balo and Parti Keadilan Rakyat's (PKR), Abdul Jalil Bujang, a businessman.
Fatimah said 50.2 per cent of voters in Balingian are women, adding that various programmes and activities, including skill courses, were carried to help them to increase their income.
