MUKAH: The Balingian state seat was vacated for ‘an honourable reason’ while the Kajang seat in Selangor was given up to ‘satisfy the motive of an individual’.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, who said this, pointed out that although both seats shared the similarity of being vacated by their assemblymen, there was a stark contrast between the two situations.
“The seat here (Balingian seat) was vacated to give way to a smooth succession plan, which is an honourable act. The Kajang seat, however, was given up for a ‘not very healthy’ plan.
“It was done to serve the motive of an individual who, after failing to control the federal government, tries to go for control of a state,” she said when officiating at the Empowerment of Bumiputera Contractors Seminar at Mukah Politechnic here yesterday.
Rosnah, thus called on the people to continue to support the BN government and reject the opposition as their leaders were irresponsible.
The Balingian assemblyman used to be former Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, but he vacated the seat last month to pave the way for his appointment as the Yang di-Pertua Negeri on March 1.
The Kajang seat, was vacated by PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh to pave the way for PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest in the by-election. However, Anwar could not contest because the appellate court reversed his sodomy acquittal and sentenced him to five years in jail several days before nomination day.
The seminar yesterday was attended by 250 Bumiputera contractors of Grade G1 to G7 within the vicinity of Mukah, including Dalat, Oya, Balingian and Sibu.
On the 19,940 Bumiputera contractors across the country, she said 207 courses were organised last year to empower them. For this year, as many as 264 courses would be organised by the Contractor Service Centre of the Works Ministry.
“These seminars are meant to equip them with knowledge to improve their standard. They were also held to nurture a sense of integrity as well as to expand their scope of understanding,“ she said, and advised contractors not to depend solely on government projects.
